Where does the title “outside the city gate” come from?

This is partly about Jesus suffering outside the gates and if anyone has been Christian long enough, they know about suffering at the hands of His own people. We also know of rebuke, reproach, cancer, shunning, ridicule, mean-spirited-ness, theology badgering, and condemnation. But here is where we are picking ourselves up and getting about the Father’s business. We’re looking for a community to get about this business with us.

Jesus suffered outside the gate for us. That old cross was on a hill far from the city. So we join Him, but, Blessed, there is also a price to pay for being near the Cross. Reproach. Painful as it is and we have felt those thorns plenty of times, reproach is the hardest. And when do not deny how forsaken this place feels to us. Yet. As much as we know this passes there is still a little blood shed, a little {or a-heaping-lot of} rejection, because being outside the city gates to follow Him to a cross, ain’t cheap. So we turn that bitter cry and we let it grow like fruit from our lips as we exchange pain for sacrifices of praise. We don’t deny the process, we just encourage one another to do good to one another and to share.

“Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered outside the gate.  Therefore let us go forth to Him, outside the camp, bearing His reproach. For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come. Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.  But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.” Hebrews 13:12-16
